Maximizing SEO: A Checklist for Success

I was on the hunt for a checklist to maximize SEO—a quick guide to keep me on track, save time, and make sure I covered all the tasks I could handle myself. Heck, maybe I'd stumble upon an SEO trick or two I didn't know about. What a bonus that would be—I just love learning new things!

I didn’t find a checklist, but BONUS... I learned more than I bargained for! I uncovered even more strategies for maximizing SEO while searching for that elusive checklist. I figured, why keep it all to myself? Here’s everything I found so you don’t have to go on a SEO scavenger hunt like I did.

1.  Optimize Title Tags and Meta Descriptions

Ensure each page of your website has a unique title tag and meta description with relevant keywords.

Keep them concise but descriptive to help search engines understand your content and improve click-through rates.

💡 Tip:  I found these fields in my website editor under "get found by Google" could also be located under "SEO", call your website host if needed.)

Quick Breakdown:

  • Meta Title: 50-60 characters, including a primary keyword specific to the page.
  • Meta Description: 140-160 characters, relevant and unique to the page.

2.  Use Alt Text for Images

💡 Tip:In my website editor, I double click on photos to access fields for entry.

Add descriptive alt text to all images on your website. This not only helps search engines understand what your images are about, enhancing overall SEO, but it also improves your chances of ranking in image searches.

💡 Tip: Avoid filler words like "in," "it," "on." For example, for an image of someone surfing, use: "person surfing waves beach."

3.  Internal Linking

Include links within your content to other relevant pages on your site. This helps visitors navigate your website and distributes page authority, making it easier for search engines to crawl your site effectively.

4.  Optimize Page Load Speed

A slow website can deter users and affect your rankings. Compress images, use a reliable hosting service, and minimize JavaScript to speed up load times.

5.  Create High-Quality, Relevant Content

Regularly publish content that addresses the needs and questions of your audience. Use relevant keywords naturally and aim to provide value that keeps visitors engaged. Careful of  just posting to post. If it's not related to your overall content it can hurt your ranking.

6.  Implement Schema Markup

Adding schema markup (structured data) helps search engines understand the context of your content, leading to enhanced search results like rich snippets.

7.  Mobile Optimization

Ensure your website is fully responsive and works seamlessly on mobile devices. Google prioritizes mobile-friendly sites, so test your pages to make sure they’re easy to navigate on smartphones and tablets.

8.  Use HTTPS for Security

Secure your website with HTTPS instead of HTTP. It’s not just about protecting data; it also signals to Google that your site is trustworthy, which can improve rankings.

9.  Focus on User Experience (UX)

Make sure your site is easy to navigate, visually appealing, and has clear calls to action. A positive user experience encourages longer visits, reducing bounce rates.

10.    Regularly Audit Your Site

Perform regular SEO audits to check for broken links, irrelevant or outdated content, and technical problems.

Tools like Google Search Console can help you identify and fix problems that may be hurting your SEO.

11.    Utilize Long-Tail Keywords

Instead of targeting broad keywords, focus on long-tail keywords that are more specific to your niche. They often have less competition and can attract highly targeted traffic.

12.  Build Quality Backlinks

Earn backlinks from reputable sites in your industry. High-quality backlinks act as votes of confidence from other websites and can significantly boost your rankings.
